One sure thing about the recent art boom: the auction houses and art fairs grabbed most of the media spotlight.

Now 53 influential New York contemporary dealers, and seven not-for-profits, have joined forces to create “New York Gallery Week,” (NYGW) a city-wide demonstration of collective muscle aimed at putting the focus back on dealers and their artists. The event is slated for May 7-10, 2010, timed to precede the spring contemporary art auctions.

At a time when many galleries are struggling, NYGW aims to ignite excitement among collectors and curators, and feature some of the accessible, free and high quality offerings at the galleries. Participating galleries will present solo exhibitions, and a full run of parties, exhibitions, talks and gallery walks are planned.

Organizers are hoping to find a sponsor,  otherwise galleries will be asked to contribute. Expenses are projected to be far lower than the $25,000 and up it costs to take part in an art fair.

The organizing committee includes: Angela Choon, Jane Hait, Julia Joern, Casey Kaplan, Anton Kern, Jason Murison, Friedrich Petzel, Andrew Richards, Pascal Spengemann and David Zwirner.

This is very interesting indeed. But what is new about it? I though it was the job of galleries to provide interesting art in interesting context always, and especially (to their benefit) when collectors hit town to buy at the auction weeks. This just seems like a way to pass of the entertainment costs to some third party, like a champagne company or something. Hmm. The recession bits, and operating budgets are being passed on to third parties?
