Asian Art Dealers Step Up to Fill Fair Void
With the 2009 demise of the International Asian Art Fair, 29 Asian art dealers have joined forces to exhibit during the March Asia Week. The international roster of dealers will mount 29 gallery shows, running March 20-28. Participating dealers hail from the U.S., England, France, Italy and Japan. Last year 16 dealers took part in a similar effort.
With the recession-driven contraction of international art fairs, art dealers are increasingly organizing their own events. The annual Asia Week is timed to coincide with the major Asian art auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s.
The Asian Art Dealers of New York is spearheading the event. The group have hired Catherine Sweeney Singer as consultant. Singer is also executive director of the Winter Antiques Show. Dealers Joan Mirviss and Jiyoung Koo helped initiate the event.
