Gagosian Empire Expands to Athens

Gagosian Gallery Athens

Gagosian Gallery Athens

This fall Gagosian Gallery opens an eighth selling outpost with the launch of a new Greek gallery at 3 Merlin Street in Athens.

One assumes the hyper-competitive Gagosian has become cozy with the top Greek collectors, including the three listed on ARTnews magazine’s 2009 list of top 200 collectors: Dakis Joannou, Dimitris Daskalopoulous, and Dinos Martinos.

The inaugural show, “Leaving Paphos Ringed with Waves,” features Cy Twombly paintings. (Wiki says: Paphos is the “mythical birthplace of Aprodite”). The show runs September 29 to December 19.

Twombly will also star at Gagosian’s Upper East Side branch, with a show including eight new bronze sculptures on view from September 15 to October 31.

Gagosian has evidently pulled out of Moscow for the time being, according to the gallery website, but has opened an office in Hong Kong.

UPDATE: A source tells us that shipping heiress Marina Livanos will be running Gagosian’s Greek venture.
