Sixty exhibitors who participated in Art Basel Miami Beach in 2008 aren’t returning this December, reflecting a  24% turnover rate.

Sixty-five dealers, some of whom participated in earlier editions, have been added to the roster. (A post with this list forthcoming). The fair includes about 250 dealers overall.

David Nolan, Maureen Paley, Donald Young, Waddington and Skarstedt are among the more established galleries on the “Out” list.

Art Basel is not alone in suffering from heavy turnover. Similar situations are impacting other art fairs of varying sizes and reputations.

The high turnover is something of a dealer fear barometer. The biggest reason for galleries dropping out, according to an informal survey and interviews with fair organizers, is financial.

Other explanations include galleries closures, personal issues and galleries not being admitted to the fair.

Art Basel did manage to maintain a higher percentage in their “Art Galleries” section, with 156 galleries out of 186 returning.

The largest flux was among younger dealers, particularly non-U.S.
