In-N-Out at Art Basel June 2010 (Part 1)

Sebaastian Bremmer "Swiss Crown" 2008, Edwynn Houk Gallery
The annual Art Basel pageant runs next week and Art Market Views has scrutinized the exhibitor list.
There are 303 exhibitors, including forty-one new exhibitors who didn’t take part in 2009. Forty dealers who were present in 2009 did not return. (Fair organizers won’t comment on who opted out and who was kicked out).
The main Art Galleries section–for which admission is notoriously competitive –reflects the least turnover.
Exhibitors are selected on the basis of their overall reputation and programming. There are 239 exhibitors in this section. Seventeen who took part in 2009 are not on the 2010 roster. Exhibitors generally return, as long as they are re-admitted. There are ten new galleries in this section, including Belgium’s Baronian Francey, Iceland’s i8 and Paris’ Kamel Mennour.
Most of the flux falls into sections where dealers are admitted based on projects –sections called Statements and Features (Features was previously called Premiere). Many of the non returners are smaller European galleries.
The largest number of exhibitors come from the U.S.–79 in total. The U.K. fields 31 exhibitors. Last year India was represented by just one gallery. This year there are five.
Tomorrow we will post a list of the new galleries who did not participate in 2009.
