In-N-Out at the Armory Show 2011 (Part I)

IMG_2833

Sharp turnover continues at the Armory Show, New York’s largest art fair, as the event struggles to retain big name Chelsea dealers.  The 2011 exhibitor list reveals the absence of key heavy hitters, including Pace Gallery, Sikkema Jenkins and David Zwirner, all of whom took part last year. Seventy-two dealers who participated in 2010 are no longer on board.

Overall the fair includes 274 exhibitors, down from around 289 in 2010. Fair organizers promise more capacious stands. VIPs gain entree on March 2, mere mortals March 3-6.

Big NY names who remain on the roster include 303 Gallery, Paul Kasmin, Sean Kelly, Lehmann Maupin and Jack Shainman. UK participants include major players  like Victoria Miro, Timothy Taylor and White Cube.

The 13th annual fair’s contemporary pier (there is a modern pier as well) has 55 galleries who did not participate in 2010. (Art Market Views “In list” of dealers who did not take part in 2010 runs tomorrow)

Those ranks include an influx of European dealers (London’s Blain Southern, Stuart Shave/Modern Art and  Zurich’s Galerie Bob van Orsouw among them). There are an additional 21 Latin dealers in connection with a special focus this year on the region, including Mexico City, Colombia, Peru and Brazil.

A handful of notable Lower East Side dealers, including Lisa Cooley, James Fuentes and Laurel Gitlen, have flown the coop.

Beside the lean economic climate, the fair faces stiff competition from the concurrently running ADAA Art Show, as well as the second annual Independent fair.

The specter of a New York Frieze venue for the London based  fair continues to loom as fair organizers are said to be exploring a 2012 launch for a U.S. outpost. (Will we see a tent in Bryant Park now that the fashion shows have vacated?)
