Sterling Ruby’s “The Masturbators” Hits Chelsea

Los Angeles artist Sterling Ruby bringsĀ  a provocative video installation starring male porn actors to the Foxy Production gallery, running Oct. 16 to Nov. 21.

Ruby filmed hired porn actors engaged in solo performances in an empty room. They were asked to “masturbate to climax,” according to the gallery press release.

Among art historical references, the work recalls Vito Acconci’s 1971 “Seedbed” performance at the Sonnabend Gallery, featuring the artist masturbating while concealed behind a wooden ramp.

Ruby’s project will be documented in a publication in collaboration with PaceWildenstein.
